John James Audubon is perhaps America's most famous wildlife artist. After completion of his huge Double Elephant size folio masterpieces between 1826-
1839, he decided to publish a smaller less expensive version which he called his "Birds of America" Royal Octavo Edition.
The "First Edition" was published by subscription only between 1840-1844. Following it's success, later editions were published beginning in 1856 and continuing until 1870. He also issued a 3 volume set of the "Quadrupeds of America" consisting of 155 animals found throughout America. There is now a New hand colored copperplate double elephant folio edition in the world of Audubon Art known as the "Institute de France" edition.
