"Bitterroot Serenade" 16" x 32" |
In the Classical music world there are tone poems that fill a niche between songs and symphonies. In the world of outdoor adventure there are hikes and then there are journeys. The former sounds trivial and the latter sounds like hard work and preoccupation with destination or mission. In between is the realm of the outfitter. Outfitters provide the where-with-all, specialized skills, and knowledge to create outdoor adventures that can be tailored to our dreams and limitations. One such adventure took place last October. I went along with Ray Rugg outfitters and elk hunter, Mike Smith into the Bitterroots west of Missoula. There were hikes, journeys, treks, and maybe even ordeals all played out against backdrops of indescribable grandeur and breathtaking beauty. Mix in a chorus of wilderness sounds and scents. Then add a nip of October morning and you have what I'll call "Bitterroot Serenade."
