Merle Haggard sings about being turned loose, "somewhere in the middle of Montana." If he changed that to, "somewhere in the middle of the Rockies," he'd probably be in the Taylor Fork. This place, are what poets, songwriters, painters and film makers mean when they say "the West." Across this breathtaking landscape the Elkhorn Ranch trails 90 horses each fall, to winter pasture, down the Madison Valley. In the spring, they will return up the same wilderness trail. This is a ritual patterned after the elk migration. Across the millennia, elk by the thousands funnel through the Taylor Fork each fall and again as spring returns to the Yellowstone Plateau.
